Wild monkeys 70 km from Fukushima show abnormalities in the blood

From ENE News

Study finds changes in blood of monkeys 70 km from Fukushima plant — ‘Epidemic infectious disease’ could occur — “We cannot find other reasons except radiation” — Effects on neurological development discovered in other mammals — “Potential direct relevance to the human population”

Scientific Reports (Nature.com), July 24, 2014:

In April 2012 we carried out a 1-year hematological study on a population of wild Japanese monkeys inhabiting the forest area of Fukushima City. This area is located 70 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant […] Total muscle cesium concentration in Fukushima monkeys was in the range of 78-1778 Bq/kg, whereas the level of cesium was below the detection limit in all [monkeys from 400 km away.] Fukushima monkeys had significantly low white and red blood cell counts, hemoglobin, and hematocrit […] These results suggest that the exposure to some form of radioactive material contributed to hematological changes in Fukushima monkeys. […] low hematological values in Fukushima monkeys could have […] been due to the effect of other radioactive materials. […] The hematological changes in the Fukushima monkeys might likely be the result of exposure to some form of radioactive material, but only radiocesium concentration was measured in this study. […] We therefore plan to investigate in a future study the underlying mechanism in detail with the aim of detecting other radioactive materials, such as 90Sr. […]

Shin-ichi Hayama1, Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University, Tokyo, July 24, 2014:

“The low haematological values in the Fukushima monkeys could have therefore been due to the effect of any radioactive materials… We did not conclude the low-blood cell counts are caused by caesium but so far we cannot find other reasons except radiation.”

Higher Education Reporter John Ross, July 25, 2014:

Reality apes movie for Fukushima monkeys — In the latest Planet of the Apes movie, a virus created in a lab pushes primate evolution into overdrive while morphing into a simian flu that wipes out most of the human race. Scientists monitoring the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown may be witnessing something similar in real life. Japanese researchers have discovered that wild monkeys in nearby mountains have lower blood cell counts [and] particularly low white blood cell levels in juvenile Fukushima monkeys […] “Low blood cell count … may suggest that the immune system has been compromised, potentially making the entire troop susceptible to, for ¬example, epidemic infectious disease.” The study suggests strongly that the blood changes are the result of nuclear contamination… corresponding to contamination levels in the soil.

Fox News, July 25, 2014:

“The findings are consistent with what our group had found with red blood cells and hemoglobin content for children living around Chernobyl,” said Tim Mousseau, a biologist at University of South Carolina, who wasn’t involved with the study. […] “The fact that they are seeing a signal in monkeys living in Fukushima city means that there’s some potential direct relevance to the human population,” Mousseau told Live Science. […] In Fukushima, researchers have so far seen significant abnormalities in butterflies and strong effects on bird populations following the leaked radioactive material.

Dr. Timothy Mousseau, Professor of Biological Sciences at the Univ. of South Carolina, July 10, 2014:

Fukushima released enormous quantities of radioactive elements […] with approximately […] 15,000 km2 land area significantly contaminated […] Key results published in 2013-14 include […] impacts on biodiversity in Fukushima […] we have recently discovered effects on neurological development in small mammals […] birds, butterflies, and cicadas showed significant declines [in abundance] during the first summer following the accident. […] In Fukushima, the first signs of developmental abnormalities have been observed in birds in 2013 […] these findings clearly demonstrate landscape-scale individual, population and ecosystem consequences […] with many examples of developmental abnormalities and deformities that likely contribute to the depressed abundances and biodiversity seen in radioactive parts of the Chernobyl and Fukushima regions.

U.S. govt cover-up: USS Ronald Reagan sailors suffering from radiation sicknes

Excerpts transcribed and posted at ENE News (www.enenews.c0m) — 7-16-14

Interview with Navy Lt. Steve Simmons who served on the USS Ronald Reagan for 3/11 relief mission, Nuclear Hotseat hosted by Libbe HaLevy, July 8, 2014 (emphasis added):

  • 21:30 in — November 2011 I noticed something was wrong… The black-out was the first thing… I started dealing with gastrointestinal issues, at first I thought I was coming down with a stomach bug… Fevers as high as 102.9°F… January 2012 was the first time I was hospitalized… [They] sent me home with a sinus infection. Three days later I was readmitted to the hospital because my lymph nodes were swelling… that’s when my legs buckled and the muscle weakness started to onset… it’s been ascending from legs, trunk, arms, hands… I can’t really use the muscles much at all. I’m down to about 20 lbs. of grip strength in my hands, which is barely functional… I do have to catheterize every 4 hours in order to empty the bladder. The migraines still get worse. The fevers still come and go, and they keep calling it a fever of unknown origin. My vitamin D is in the gutter, they just keep calling it an unspecified vitamin D deficiency… 2nd degree burns on my legs just from being out in the sun for 3 or 4 hours… that had never been a concern. Nobody can figure it out. I’ve been getting these rashes that come and go; they’ll go up my arms, my neck, around my eyes, back, stomach, legs. I deal with tremors and spasms… I am [in a wheelchair]… There’s days I don’t even get out of bed… for a long time I thought I was the only one. I had no idea there were other individuals that were even sick or dealing with ailments… Doctors wouldn’t tell us anything… I’ve had doctors tell me maybe you’re better off not knowing what you’re dealing with… You can’t have over 100 or 200 people sick, and one who has died last April, and say there is absolutely no health risk.
  • 35:00 in — Finding out that there’s more people that are sick, finding out there were some other individuals at Walter Reed [Hospital]… almost identical symptoms to what I was dealing with… they we’re told to be quiet, and next thing I know they’re, who knows where they’re at, nobody’s heard from them, nobody has seen them. I have a buddy at Walter Reed right now, whose going through the same exact thing, very similar to what I’m dealing with — maybe 6 months to a year behind on the symptoms… His wife would call my wife and my wife would explain what he could expect next and sure as anything that happens next… Him and I both had doctors who have actively tried to convince us that there’s physically nothing wrong and it’s all psychological… This is ridiculous… He’s also in a wheelchair and when he went to the clinic to get fitted for a wheelchair, this doctor told him that it’s all in his head, and he doesn’t need a wheelchair… This is uncalled for.
  • 46:00 in — We now realize how bad it was… the worst disaster in history, then it’s time to acknowledge the fact that, yeah there is a problem, and there are going to be some effects on human life… If the worst case happens, and some more folks pass — I would have to be naive to think that nobody else is going to pass away from this — it’s only a matter of time before there’s more lives lost. I would be lying if I don’t think every day that I’m going to be next because of how bad my health keeps going downhill.

Two sets of radiation data — public vs. private

http://globalcooperative.wordpress.com/2011/07/03/radioactive-iodine-131-usa-forecasts-to-may-13/

Radioactive Iodine-131 USA Forecasts (to May 13)

Jul 3, 2011: During the first two months after the Fukushima disaster began, the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) was providing public forecasts of possible radioactive isotope concentrations around the world that were generated by their Flexpart forecasting software. In late April, some six weeks or so after the reactor meltdowns had begun in Japan, someone following the news about the nuclear catastrophe posted a link to an obscure folder on a completely distinct server at NILU [1] where “private” radiation forecast maps were also being created. Note that the reason for referring to these obscured forecasts as private is simple: no public link or reference to the folder containing them was ever put anywhere on the NILU site.

Before looking at the images it is useful to briefly discuss the matter of “scale” relative to these kind of forecast maps. Simply changing the scale makes a significant difference to the appearance of the forecasts, with the images looking much less serious (or “threatening”) when higher scales are used for the maps. With the public (and clearly false) “forecasts” from NILU, it appears that a very high scale was used so as to greatly reduce the size and apparent intensity of the “clouds” of radioactive isotopes. Then, it appears that the new higher scale was replaced by an incorrect and 100-times (at least) reduced scale. Thus, making the appearance of “nothing to see here” that is consistent with the constant mantra that “there is no public health threat” from the radioactive fallout. Consider that people around the world would have been significantly more disturbed about the radioactive poisons spewing from Fukushima if they were to see forecast images showing 100-fold and higher levels (as seen below) of radioactive isotopes than the public “forecasts” ever showed.

Former Minister for Internal Affairs Haraguchi Kazuhiro has alleged that radiation monitoring station data was actually three decimal places greater than the numbers released to the public. If this is true, it constitutes a “national crime”
, in Nishio’s words. He follows with, “Giving us the truth once is much more important than saying ‘hang in there Japan!’ a million times.” [11]

Indeed, if the allegation by the former Minister for Internal Affairs in Japan is true, then it means that radiation data was intentionally reduced by a factor of 1,000 (three decimal places)! We will have to see if any proof of this is ever made public. In any case, there is already a mountain of evidence proving the many lies from every “official mouthpiece” relative to the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, which means that there is inherently a lot of credence to an allegation that data showing radiation levels was reduced by a factor of 1,000. Only due to the huge efforts of ordinary human beings in Japan is there any more accurate data of radiation levels than that being provided in the first couple of months by the “authorities” (that are only “authorities” when it comes to criminal irresponsibility, shown by their utter failure to fulfill one of their primary functions, which is ostensibly to protect the tax-paying public from dangers to the health caused by industrial catastrophes!).

Plutonium Playgrounds

No, not those of nuke researchers
nor the atom bomb-making Berserkers
and I don’t mean places like Rocky Flats,
Alamogordo or Hanford’s big vats:
I mean places of outdoor play for kids
made deadly by what the insane Nukists did.
We’ve seen bags of hot rad-dirt on the side,
the shielded monitors, installed too high,
we know “decon” dumping is done “on the sly”
and we know the damn Nukists constantly lie,
denying where there’s nukes, more nuclides fly
into the air to be spread worldwide.
There’s the playgrounds in Fukushima deserted,
in all the places they evacuated,
there’s the playgrounds that sit, mostly quiet,
as the children can’t spend much time outside,
there’s the playgrounds being recontaminated
and playgrounds the safety of which is questioned
by the geiger readings of private citizens.
There’s so many places the kids should not be,
but they are, and worse;
some time, by official decree,
they’ll be sent home to hot playgrounds as Returnees.
And they want to restart their Npps.
I’m sorry if I’m making you bored.
Don’t read my next post, as I’ve said it before.

Skipping Game

“The rain! The rain!
Run Children! Run!
Come inside quick!
There’s plutonium!”

……………….

“Onesies, Twosies, Threesies – Stop!
Kids gotta go in
when the sky’s hot!”

“Foursies, Fivesies, Sixies – Jump!
Feel ’round yer neck
in case there’s a lump!”

“Sevensies, Eightsies, Ninesies – Fall!
Out comes yer hair
so the Doctor ya call!”

“Tensies, Elevensis, Twelvesies – a dozen!
Yer Sister got Cancer,
and so did our Cousin!”

……………………

“Oh, they’ll adapt.
Kids are resilient.”

So say our Leaders,
with reasoning reptilian,
uncaring that, by their acts,
they are, in fact, killing them.

World Peace & Prayer Days, June 19-22, New York

June 19, 20, 21, 22 2014 – World Peace & Prayer Days will take place in The Hudson Valley, New York.

World Peace and Prayer DayAll nations around the world honor sacred sites as places holding unique geographical, spiritual, historical and often mythological significance. These places of worship—intended to unite people in peace, can all too easily become a source of power struggle, greed and environmental abuse. It is by no coincidence that places where the Earth vibrates with magnified energy, also commonly align with rich pockets of Earth’s greatest natural resources. Therefore, the importance of protecting sacred sites and educating people about the value of restoring them to balance, reaches beyond the realm of spiritual ideals and directly into the impact their restoration has, on the health of the environment. Chief Looking Horse will be visiting some of the sacred sites of the area on Sunday the 23rd, performing ceremony to cleanse the lands.

The Sacred Fire is the heart of World Peace and Prayer Day. It will be lit on June 19th, upon the arrival of the Sage Boy riders and their horses, the Buddhist walkers and the Peace Pole carried from the World Peace Prayer Society in Wassaic, NY to be placed in the park by Chief Arvol Looking Horse. The Unify Network is also hosting another globally synchronized meditation so that you can participate wherever you are. Click here to participate with Unify Network.

The celebrations will continue with Earth and animal awareness activities, talking circles, storytelling, and shared feasts. All activities and events are offered at no cost to all. Please bring food to cook and share!

The Sacred Fire is honored over four days, with a special ceremonial emphasis – following traditional Lakota Sioux ways, on Summer Solstice, Saturday June 21. As the sacred fire burns there will be a time when everyone is invited to offer tobacco and prayers to the fire. This prayerful Summer Solstice Day will be followed by the sharing of wisdom keepers and speakers, joining us from far and wide. The notable list of speakers includes, Tom Goldtooth, Betsy Stang, Chief Phil Lane Jr, Rebecca Tobias, Shri Natha Devi Premananda, Polly Higgins, Faith Spotted Eagle, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and many others. Please visit World Peace and Prayer Day  online to learn more! http://worldpeaceandprayerday.com/

Solstice actions

Posted under the tab “What we can do; Working with Water” is a suggestion from Tom Kenyon for creating healing water for oneself.

Let’s take this idea and expand it much, much further.

Allow some time before the exact moment of Solstice.

Create a sacred space for this. Be aware of yourself, your breathing, your body, and where you are. Spend some time being thankful for yourself.

Hold Japan and its surrounding seas in your hands. Bring your love and healing from every part of your being, to your heart and then down to your hands, to Japan — to all the people, all the living beings, all the waters there, the sky, the land, and the surrounding ocean.

Hold the Pacific Ocean, from shore to shore, between your hands. Bring down the wisdom and beauty and love from the highest part of yourself to the deep goodness of your heart. Then let that flow down to your hands and to the ocean. Spend time doing this.

Then, hold the Earth in the same way. Send that healing and love from all of you, coming to your heart, then flowing down your arms to your hands to the Earth.

As the Solstice takes place, join in your imagination with all of us as we focus our love and gratitude and healing power on our beautiful Earth.

The solstice time is 10:51 UTC on June 21.

Nuclear amnesia — U.S. Senate testimony by Daniel Hirsch

Testimony of Daniel Hirsch,
President of Committee to Bridge the Gap
18 September 2008

Before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works

Full testimony:

Click to access Hirsch%20EPW%20Testimony.pdf

Excerpts:

SSFL [Santa Susanna Field Laboratory] is a good case study of problems at federal nuclear facilities throughout the country. The AEC/DOE [Atomic Energy Commission/Department of Energy] for decades operated these extraordinarily dangerous enterprises with little consideration for environmental regulation or protection of the public. They felt they were above the law, and the affected people nearby simply did not matter.

Corners were cut, rules bent, safety restrictions ignored. When accidents resulted, they were covered up.

Leaking high level waste tanks at Hanford, contamination from reactor accidents and improper waste disposal at INEEL, reprocessing failures at Savannah River, releases from Paducah and Oak Ridge and so many other nuclear sites—the story is always the same. Sloppy practices, inadequate attention to safety, lack of concern about the neighboring public, failure to be candid about problems—the result has been contamination that is amongst the biggest environmental insults this country has ever faced…

There are some who now argue for a revival of all things nuclear. They want scores more reactors. They want irradiated nuclear fuel to be reprocessed. They want breeder reactors to make even more plutonium.

But to do that, they need the country to experience a kind of nuclear amnesia.

They need us to forget the meltdown of the SRE [Sodium Reactor Experiment’, the explosion of the SL-1 [Idaho], the near-disaster of the N reactor [Hanford]. They need us to forget the immense contamination from the last time we tried reprocessing, the tens of billions of dollars it is costing to try to redress the damage from reprocessing at Hanford, Savannah River, and West Valley. They need us to forget the meltdown of the EBR-1 breeder in Idaho and Fermi I breeder, when we almost lost Detroit.

For those in the impacted communities from the last nuclear era, it all seems like nuclear déjà vu again. We hear echoes of all the old discredited claims again: that nuclear will be “too cheap to meter,” even as the industry asks for a hundred billion dollars in taxpayer subsidies and guarantees; that we will somehow find a solution to the radioactive waste problem, even though sixty-six years after the first reactor wastes were created no solution is in sight; that the risk of accident is non-existent, even as industry asks for immunity from liability from such accidents; that proliferation and terrorism risks can be ignored, even as we face a world in which countries are getting nuclear weapons from civil nuclear technology.

We hear the same old claims that nuclear is safe and clean;

yet our communities are still trying to get the government to clean up the radioactive contamination from all the past nuclear accidents, spills, and other releases from the last time we tried this.

It is said that those who forget the lessons of the past are condemned to repeat them, and repeat them, and repeat them. A sensible energy policy cannot depend upon collective amnesia. The last time we went down this road, it resulted in an unmitigated disaster for which we are still paying, in billions and billions of dollars of cleanup expenses, but more importantly, in poisoned land and water, and cancers in brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, cousins and nephews.

Let us learn from our mistakes rather than going blindly into repeating them. Otherwise, this deeply troubled nuclear past will indeed be prologue.

NBC Right Now, Apr. 30, 2014: Former Hanford Worker Sick from Nuclear Waste

  • Jane Sander, reporter: A nuclear waste spill happened hours before at the tank farm.
  • Lonnie Poteet, Hanford worker: I was already burning from my glove line to my t-shirt line and… starting to lose a little bit of vision in my right eye… Why didn’t they say something?
  • Sander: Poteet describes living his life now as recluse… sharp pains in his head, they cause him to often twitch. He says medication prevents him from collapsing in pain due to severe nerve damage in his brain.
  • Poteet: [More Hanford workers] are going to be exposed to the same situation… Nobody is going to do anything to stop it… As long as there’s profit… and they get their bonuses on a decent time, that’s all they care about… Most of the workers onsite right now are running scared. They will not bring up any safety concerns because as soon as you do, you’re going to be labeled and thrown off the site, just as fast as they can go. They’ll either create stuff that never happened, or they’ll find ways to get you.

NBC Right Now, June 5, 2014: Sick Former Hanford Worker Speaks Out

  • Jane Sander, reporter: He sadly lives his life with a deadly disease…
  • Lawrence Rouse, Hanford worker:  I have toxic encephalopathy… it eats your brain away.
  • Sander: Near the end of his almost 20 years at Hanford… he began to develop severe symptoms. Stuttering, memory loss, losing teeth…emotionally unstable…violent outbursts.
  • Rouse: [My son] wrote this letter, this little poem, and said that his dad is gone… It would rain the chemicals on you from the stack. That’s why we wore the baseball caps.
  • Sander: The Washington Dept. of Labor and DOE denied [compensation]… Since the [EEOICPA] program began in 2001, they’ve paid more than $1 billion in compensation and medical bills to [6,936 Hanford] workers…
  • Rouse: DOE has always denied everything. And that’s not going to change.
  • Sander: More Hanford workers continue to file claims for their illnesses.
  • Watch the broadcast here

KING 5 Seattle (NBC),
June 4, 2014: It’s an unprecedented series of workplace accidents in the state. Since mid-March the number Hanford workers seeking medical help after breathing in chemical vapors has risen to 34.

  • Susannah Frame, reporter: Vapors causing serious illnesses at Hanford is not new… at the most contaminated workplace in the nation, OSHA can’t get past the gates to investigate.
  • Diana Gegg, Hanford worker: It’s turned my life upside down.
  • Frame: Brain damage, sudden tremors, vision loss, dementia – Illnesses the gov’t admits were caused by exposure… she can’t go out without a wheelchair, cook, or drive.
